The TMJ System™
Temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) disorder is commonly misunderstood and often goes undiagnosed. It’s an integral part of myofunctional orthodontics because if there is poor oral function (or soft tissue dysfunction), TMJ disorder is almost always present too.
Appliances in the TMJ System™ relax jaw and neck muscles, relieve pressure on the TMJ, limit bruxing (teeth grinding) and can reduce head and neck pain.

TMJ Appliance

The TMJ Appliance™ is a prefabricated, soft, flexible (medical silicone) appliance that is fitted by the patient. The TMJ Appliance™ offers immediate diagnosis and effective treatment for TMJ disorder
using the muscle and joint palpation procedure.

The TMJ Appliance™ works best to relax the cranio-mandibular muscles - for extra-capsular relief. It treats symptoms by decompressing the joint through its aerofoil shaped base and eliminating the effects of bruxing with its double-mouthguard effect.

Further relief is provided by the change in the resting length of the muscles when the appliance is in place. This treatment assists in relieving TMJ and cranio-mandibular symptoms, limiting bruxing and grinding, and improves patient comfort.

TMD Appliance

The TMD Appliance™ is a hard, semi-flexible, customizable, day-time splint using dual layer technology developed by MRC. Once heated in boiled water for 2 minutes, it is fitted to the patient’s lower arch and the bite can be customized to the patient’s requirements. It is low profile with a tight and comfortable fit to allow use during daily activities, allowing clear and easy speech.

The TMD Appliance™ performs much the same as a TMJ Appliance™, only it is specially designed for patients who require a daytime splint for the relief of TMJ symptoms.
It treats symptoms by decompressing the TM joints through its aerofoil shaped base. The customisable, low-profile design allows for tight and comfortable fit for patients who need to maintain clear speech during the daytime.

The TMD Appliance™ is most effective when used during the day in combination with the TMJ Appliance™ during the night. It can be used for immediate symptom relief throughout the day and is particularly effective at reducing clicking and acute TM Joint pain. It is also suitable for patients who have missing molars.

TMJ MBV (Mouth Breather Version)

The TMJ-MBV™ features four large breathing holes, and a 7mm base with air springs for increased bite opening and gentle TM Joint decompression (if a larger appliance is required there is also an 11mm base version available). The TMJ-MBV™ allows for free movement of the mandible when in place which is ideal for patients with an existing TMJ disorder.

The TMJ-MBV™ (TMJ Mouth Breather Version) was designed to cater for the increasing demand from patients who experience both Temporo-mandibular Joint (jaw joint) Disorder and snoring. It is a prefabricated, soft, flexible (medical silicone) appliance that is fitted by the patient with two sizes - a smaller, 7mm base and a larger, 11mm base.

Although the TMJ-MBV™ appears to be a physically larger appliance compared to the regular TMJ Appliance™, it is still comfortable to wear. The increased size is mainly due to the higher vertical sides which result in much better retention, particularly when the mouth is open (as is typical in snorers).

BruxOgard Appliances

Bruxing is defined as grinding, gnashing or clenching of the teeth. It is mostly an unconscious habit as a result of tension or anxiety.

Patients who show long term damage from bruxing can be a restorative nightmare. Occlusal wear, mobility, cusp fracture and TMJ symptoms are evident when these cases arise. Resolving the causes of bruxing goes far beyond the dentist’s scope of treatment. However, limiting or preventing further damage from this common problem is the role of every general dental practitioner.

Patients are given limited options for a solution to their bruxing symptoms. Full coverage splints have been used for years to limit the damaging effects of bruxing, but are difficult to fit and adjust. Patients are reluctant to cover the costs and would rather live with the problem, often leading to further damage of the teeth.

The Bruxogard™ Soft can be used to effectively manage and reduce bruxing symptoms without time consuming procedures. The appliance can be fitted in less than 4 minutes by either the patient or dental professional, with all fitting and usage instructions included in the pack.

The Bruxogard™ Soft is designed for patients who only display signs of moderate bruxing or are less than 12 years of age.

The Bruxogard™ Hard can be used to effectively manage and reduce the symptoms of heavy bruxing without the time consuming procedures. The appliance can be fitted in less than 4 minutes by either the patient or dental professional, with all fitting and usage instructions included in the pack.

The Bruxogard Hard™ is designed for patients who display symptoms of heavy bruxing and who prematurely wear out the Bruxogard™ Soft.
